Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world. It is spoken in Spain and throughout most of the Latin American region (the Spanish speaking countries in Latin America are commonly referred to as Hispanic America); from Mexico in the north to Chile and Argentina in the south. One African country also speak Spanish, namely the central African nation Equatorial Guinea. Also, Spanish was formerly an official language of the Philippines. Spanish is the official language in 21 countries and, according to the Cervantes Institute – the key government agency responsible for promoting the language worldwide – there are currently 577 million people using Spanish.
Currently, the United States is where Spanish is growing the fastest. Numbers from 2016 demonstrate that 17.8 percent of the population is Hispanic. About 40 million speak the language in the North American country (El País, 3 July 2018).
I have studied and worked in Spanish on a daily basis since 2006. Currently I use it every day both in a professional and in a private setting.
